Project Overview

Objective

NMC were awarded the contract for a complete resurfacing project at ASDA Wigan. The site entailed over 18,000m² of resurfacing using 1,300 tonnes of material with a full relining scheme, signs, and installation of bollards and landscaping.

As turnkey car park maintenance experts, specialising in Surfacing and Civil Engineering, NMC were awarded this project at ASDA Wigan. Working at a busy store our experts planned the works through 10 distinct phases ensuring the works could commence during normal opening hours with minimal disruption. The works also included resurfacing some areas out of hours between 16:00 to 22:30, but not beyond, to access roads and the on site petrol filling stations inbound and out bound access

Delivery

Traffic management was utilised to ensure the safe delivery of these works during operating hours, heras fencing secured the working area from the general public, closing sections of the car park for resurfacing works and reopening freshly laid areas within 48 hours, ensuring only small sections of the car park were closed. An area of 4000m² of planing and resurfacing was carried out in an undercroft car park with restricted head room, so our standard plant could not be utilised. We engaged our supply chain early to ensure that the correct plant for this scenario was utilised. Small tracked bob cat planers, amenity sweepers, midi pavers and dumpers were utilised to track bituminous material from a stockpile to the works face. During the course of these works a sinkhole appeared within phase 3. Only a small depression the size of a dinner plate was encountered initially. This was spotted by our site managers Richard Harrison, and his vigilance ensured that we did not put any of our own staff, operatives or the general public at risk. This sink hole was due to a UU drain run not being connected properly and all of the fines and back fill material had been washed away. The hole was 3mx3mx2m deep and repaired by UU’s AMP 6 partner under our Supervision and management. NMC re-phased our works to ensure continuity of outputs and to ensure that the programme remained on track. Completed to schedule the site was handed back to a very happy client.

“Excellent communication from NMC, the works caused minimal disruption and the overall standard looks very good”
